The city’s Building Energy Performance Standards (BEPS) were put in place to place those buildings on track to a cleaner, more energy-efficient future. The District is a trailblazer nationally, being the first to pass such standards for existing buildings that also carry hefty fines for noncompliance.

We welcomed three guests who provided different perspectives on BEPS. David Roodberg (Horning Brothers) described the challenge upgrades pose to apartment buildings, while Joseph Reilly (Akridge) offered the commercial property side of things. Theresa Backhus (Building Innovation Hub) works as an intermediary between the government and property owners so that BEPS requirements are met.
